Biography

Gretchen M. Ahrendt, MD, FACS, is associate professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the director of Surgical Breast Services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Her practice is dedicated to the management of breast cancer, high risk breast findings, and common benign disorders.

She is board-certified in general surgery with additional training in the evaluation and management of breast diseases including both benign and malignant pathology. Dr. Ahrendt received a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she also completed surgical training. She completed a fellowship in research at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Dr. Ahrendt joined the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology at UPMC in 2005 after serving as the codirector of the Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Program at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.

Dr. Ahrendt is the Program Director of the Breast Surgery Fellowship at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. This fellowship is to train future leaders in breast cancer surgery. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Breast Surgeons, and American Society of Breast Disease. Her research interests include the impact of breast MRI on surgical planning for breast cancer and how tumor subtypes respond to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. She believes in incorporating new advances from clinical trials into current treatment of her patients. Her practice goal is to provide each patient with a comprehensive individualized treatment plan that incorporates best practice and personal preferences to yield the optimal outcome.

She has contributed many presentations, abstracts, and publications on breast cancer-related topics.
