Conditions We Treat
Mesothelioma Specialty Care experts have particular expertise in the treatment of this rare cancer of the chest and abdomen.
There are two types of mesothelioma:
- Pleural mesothelioma — develops in the lining of the lungs
- Peritoneal mesothelioma — develops in the lining of the abdomen
Comprehensive treatment planning
Mesothelioma Specialty Care at UPMC CancerCenter brings together a multidisciplinary team of leading experts in thoracic surgical oncology, surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pulmonology, pathology, radiology, pain management, and palliative care. Treatment strategies are developed in tandem with referring physicians, and often involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of treatments and clinical trials when appropriate.
Diagnostic and Screening Services
Mesothelioma Specialty Care experts use comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic tests to obtain cells to evaluate under the microscope, including:
- Paracentesis — removal of fluid from the abdominal cavity
- Thoracentesis — removal of fluid from the chest cavity
To determine the best course of treatment, these evaluations may be used in combination with a variety of image-guided biopsy techniques, including:
- Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
- Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
- Bronchoscopic biopsy
- CT-guided needle biopsy
- Minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) biopsy
For a majority of mesothelioma cases, surgery is the main method of care.
There are two types of mesothelioma: pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Specialty Care surgical experts have developed state-of-the-art surgical and intraoperative chemotherapy treatment approaches for both types of cancer.
Medical oncology services
Medical oncologists specializing in mesothelioma offer a full range of chemotherapy and biologic targeted therapies for all types and stages of cancer.
Patients also have access to the latest therapies and clinical trials through the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, western Pennsylvania's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Although many of these clinical trials are available at Hillman Cancer Center, the Specialty Care Center team is working to expand availability throughout the UPMC CancerCenter network.
Radiation therapy may be an additional treatment option if you have already undergone surgery, or may be the best course of treatment if you are not a candidate for surgery.
