Cord Blood Transplantation for Blood Cancers
Cord blood transplantation may be a treatment option for people with certain types of blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma.
At the Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers and UPMC CancerCenter, we partner with the National Marrow Donor Program™ to register patients who may benefit from cord blood treatment and need a donor match.
Cord blood transplantation may be an ideal treatment for blood cancers, because cord blood is:
- Rich in blood-forming cells that can be used in transplants.
- Versatile; cord blood does not need to match as closely as donated bone marrow.
- Convenient, because it is stored ready to use.
