UPMC Health Library

Learn more about cancer care on the UPMC Health Library. The UPMC online health library is a great resource to help you manage your health. View the Featured Learning Centers for frequently requested health education information. For additional information, use the search bar and type in your specific topic.

Gumberg Family Resource Center

The Gumberg Family Resource Center — found on the ground floor of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center — provides learning materials and guidance to patients and their families, friends, and caregivers.

All of our services are free.

A Patient Navigator and volunteers are on hand to help you find what you need. They can also provide access to cancer support services at Hillman and in the community.

What You'll Find at the Resource Center

The center has a wide range of free books and pamphlets from the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society.

It also has the latest information about many types of cancers and treatment options, such as:

Some of the topics you can learn about include:

  • Cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Side effect management
  • Child and family concerns
  • Caregiver tips
  • Special nutrition
  • Personal appearance
  • Coping and stress management
  • Integrative, palliative, and hospice care
  • Cancer prevention and early detection
  • Survivorship

Patients and their loved ones can use these resources in the center or borrow them to use:

  • During cancer treatment.
  • In the waiting room.
  • At home.

If needed, the center will provide a postage paid envelope to return them with no fee.

Other items at the center include:

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • CD players and CDs of music and relaxation techniques
  • Computers and laptops with internet access
  • Movies and portable DVD players
  • Support group listings in western Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio and West Virginia
  • Lists of suggested websites and specialty shops

Coming From Out of Town for Cancer Care?

For out-of-town cancer patients and guests, the Gumberg Family Resource Center offers concierge services.

Concierges can help with:

  • Directions, maps, parking, and transportation options
  • Discounted lodging
  • Dining options
  • Pittsburgh attractions and things to do

About the Gumberg Family Resource Center

Founded in 1992 at UPMC Montefiore, the Gumberg Family Resource Center moved to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in 2002.

Gifts and donations help support the center and allow us to provide our services for free.

We use donations to:

  • Increase the selection of learning materials
  • Upgrade equipment
  • Improve patient services
