Cancer Screenings Save Lives
Routine cancer screenings play an important role in early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer.
Some cancers can develop without symptoms, and only show symptoms after they have grown and spread. Screenings can show abnormalities in the body that can then be tested for cancer.
There are different kinds of screening tests including:
- Physical exam – The body will be checked for lumps or anything else that seems unusual
- Laboratory tests – Test samples of blood, tissue, urine, or other substances in the body are taken and analyzed
- Imaging procedures – Pictures are taken inside the body
- Genetic tests – Genetic mutations are looked for in the body
Because cancer screenings can help diagnosis early stage cancers when they are easier to treat, it is important to talk with your doctor to determine which screenings are appropriate for you.
