Education & Training Courses Available

Courses for nurses, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who care for oncology patients are outlined below. Registration is required for all courses and is available for UPMC employees through uLearn. Links to the registration form for non-UPMC employees are provided below. Courses are held on the UPMC Shadyside Campus.

Course times, unless otherwise specified, are as follows:

  • Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
  • Lectures begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.
  • Course adjournment is at 4:30 p.m.

Date: December 2, 2016
Time: Ancillary & medical assistant staff: 8 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Nurses and clinical staff: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This one-day course provides a general overview of cancer, the disease process, treatments, symptom management, and its impact on patients and families. It is intended to enhance the practice of both health care professionals and ancillary staff who care for cancer patients in hospitals, ambulatory care, home care, hospice, extended care or rehabilitation settings.

Staff members can attend only the morning session or the entire day. The morning topics are applicable to all staff, including nurses, office staff and other health care professionals, who want to learn more about what cancer is, treatment options, and psychosocial needs of cancer patients. The afternoon topics are geared for nurses and other staff who need to learn more about assessment and care of oncology patients, the use of blood products and selected oncology emergencies.

To receive 6.6 Contact Hour(s), the learner must attend the entire day of class and submit a completed activity evaluation form.

2016 Fall Course Dates: Tuesday, October 4; Tuesday, October 11; Tuesday, October 18; Friday, October 28; and Thursday, November 3, 2016 (test date)

Time: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Location: Exact location will be provided in the confirmation letter.

This four-day course is designed to address needs of nursing, pharmacy and other professionals in relation to chemotherapy and biological therapies. It includes information on current pharmacotherapy, safe handling, and administration of anticancer agents and various issues concerning the management of patients receiving cancer therapy.

Continuing Education Credit for Entire Comprehensive Chemotherapy Course
UPMC Provider Unit is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

To receive 24.58 Contact Hour(s), the learner must attend the entire activity, complete the activity evaluation forms, and successfully complete the written exam with a score of 80% or greater.

This certificate confirms that the participant has successfully completed the course and has the theoretical foundation needed to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy. This is not a certification course; individual institutions are responsible for determining their own requirements based on internal policies for assessing clinical competency in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration.

Continuing Education Credit for Comprehensive Chemotherapy Course for Interventional Radiology

UPMC Provider Unit is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation

To receive 11.25 Contact Hour(s), the learner must attend the designated lectures, complete the activity evaluation forms, and successfully complete the written exam with a score of 80% or greater.

This certificate confirms that the participant has successfully completed the course and has the theoretical foundation needed to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy. This is not a certification course; individual institutions are responsible for determining their own requirements based on internal policies for assessing clinical competency in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration.

Chemotherapy Course Testing
2016 Fall Course: Thursday, November 3, 2016
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Location: Exact location will be provided in the confirmation letter.

This test taking time is only for UPMC employees. Chemo Course attendees and their managers may choose to have testing completed in a proctored setting at their work site. Please discuss with your manager prior to registration. Exam time is proctored and successful completion will fulfill course requirements.

Non-UPMC employees are also required to test, tests are mailed at course completion.

This two-day course provides an overview of the information required to assist the oncology nurse in preparing for the oncology nursing certification (OCN) exam. Information provided in this course is consistent with review materials provided by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.

This two-day course addresses the individual and joint needs of nursing, pharmacy, and other professions in relation to Stem Cell Transplantation. It includes information on current transplantation issues such as patient work-up, disease process, and patient care and management. Selected topics include differentiating types of transplants, mobilization and preparative regimens, growth factors, the role of total body irradiation, transfusion issues, graft vs. host disease, veno-occlusive disease, and other transplant related topics.

Additional Oncology Educational Opportunities

Palliative Care Breakfast Series

Dates: November 23; December 28, 2016
Time: 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.
Location: UPMC Shadyside Campus. Exact location will be provided via email.

This morning breakfast program addresses patient care issues and common problems encountered in the oncology palliative care setting. This program is offered monthly at the Hillman Cancer Center and via conference call to any interested UPMC site. No registration is needed for attendance at Hillman Cancer Center. Continuing education credit may be available. Light breakfast is served at the live location.

American Society of Radiologic Technologists

Dates: November 16; December 21, 2016
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Location: Exact location will be provided via email.

Programs with ASRT credit and a focus on radiation oncology issues are offered monthly at UPMC Shadyside and via conference call to all interested UPMC sites. No registration is needed for attendance at UPMC Shadyside. Continuing education credit may be available for ASRT and nurses. Lunch is provided at the live location.
